Viber, a VoIP and messaging app now boasts of over 100 million registered concurrent users. The app that was recently acquired by Japanese Internet company Rakuten for $900 million always released the number of registered users. We never heard anything about ‘active daily or monthly users’ from Viber’s desk. Today Viber hosts more than 360 million unique registered and 100 million active users. Viber has an estimation that around 200 million of its users are reachable via the platform almost “anytime”.
Viber rolled out a new desktop version after hitting 100 million concurrent users. This new desktop version is said to be essentially aesthetic with its main focus concentrated on stickers. CEO Talmon Marco recently stated at a press “As usage increases, our priority remains the same-introducing features, adding more platforms, and improving Viber with every new version. This is exactly what we’ve done with the new Viber Desktop, and we’re really excited for our users to try it out”.
The messaging app faces competition from not just other messaging apps like Line, KakaoTalk, whatsapp, etc but also from platforms themselves like Apple and Android. With Facebook acquiring Whatsapp at $19 billion, the competition for Viber is tough!
Viber has put in a lot of effort to reach to this position. The main reason that Viber is a hot app out there is its availability on multiple platforms- Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry, and others. At present, Viber has its undivided attention on spreading out in new markets and capturing them; and it has already begun with the addition of two new languages- Portuguese and Spanish.
